Box Score ST. PETERSBURG — In a contest with enormous FCSAA Tournament implications, Polk State Basketball showed what it was made of on Wednesday night. The Eagles finished strong to down St. Petersburg College for a second straight Citrus Conference road win, 67-62.
Polk State (16-9, 4-7 Citrus Conference) led 32-30 at halftime and for most of the night. With just over five minutes to play, however, the Eagles were on the short end of a 54-50 score.
After letting a nine-point second-half lead slip away, Polk State finished on a 17-8 run to notch the victory.
Jordan Brown scored with just over two minutes to play to break a 58-58 tie and put the Eagles ahead for good.
"My team rallied together and made plays down the stretch to win the game," Head Coach Brandon Giles said. "I am extremely proud of this group for their resilience and continuing to overcome tough situations and find a way."
Cole White and
Fray Nguimbi each finished with 13 points to lead the Eagles. White came through with 11 points in the second half. Nguimbi also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Kenny Fields added 11 points.
With the win, Polk State has now won consecutive games for the first time since Dec. 13 and 17. The Eagles clinched a winning season and moved into a tie for fifth place in the conference. They'll return home to host Florida SouthWestern State College for Sophomore Day on Saturday.
