Polk State Softball sweeps Oakland

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN — We're less than a month into the 2025 season and Polk State Softball has already equaled last year's win total. The Eagles accomplished the feat with a doubleheader sweep of Oakland Community College on Friday.

Polk State opened the day with a 6-1 win. From the circle, Tessa Anderson was stellar for the Eagles, allowing just a run on three hits to earn the win.

All the offense came in the fourth inning. After Oakland Community broke the scoreless tie in the top of the inning, the Eagles pushed six runs across in the bottom of the frame.

Veronica Fernandez singled home the tying run before Jamie Glassford was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to put Polk State ahead to stay. Nayeli Hernandez followed by bouncing a two-run single through the right side to highlight the inning. Glassford and Hernandez came around to score later in the inning.

Fernandez finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Polk State outhit the Owls, 6-4.

A five-run fifth turned a close game into a rout in the second game as Polk State prevailed in six innings by a score of 11-3.

Rylee Hartnell broke the 2-2 tie in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single before Makenzie Foster delivered the big blow with a two-run double. A dropped fly ball allowed two more runs to score later in the inning.

After the Owls got a run back in the top of the sixth, Polk State (11-6) ended the contest in the sixth with four runs and the help of some sloppy Oakland defense. The Owls committed three of their six errors in the inning. After a pinch-hit RBI single by Savannah Jacobs extended the lead to 10-3, a bases-loaded walk to Joyleen Vidal capped the night.

The second game was hardly a thing of beauty as the teams combined for nine errors, leading to nine total unearned runs. Pitcher Jamie Reinhardt allowed just one earned run in the complete game while setting a season-high and tying a career-high with six strikeouts.

Foster and Leia Hurst each finished with two hits. Hurst and Chelsi Rae' Hebert each scored twice in the Polk State win. Isabella Asai  finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored for the Owls in the loss.

After a rough stretch in which the Eagles had lost four of five, Polk State hopes the doubleheader sweep will get things rolling in the right direction once again. Polk State begins Citrus Conference play at home on Tuesday against No. 1 Indian River State College.
