Box Score WINTER HAVEN -- Polk State Softball picked up a non-conference game on Friday and a victory. In a contest where offense was sparse early, the Eagles settled in and rolled to a 5-2 win.

Starting pitcher Kaylyn Mitchum was the star of the show for Polk State, tossing five shutout innings. Mitchum allowed just three hits and a walk while fanning two.

Batting as the visiting team in its home park, Polk State broke through in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs. After Karyna Lewis took home on a wild pitch to get the scoring started, Destiny Driskell's sacrifice fly scored Natalie Hiles to push the lead to 2-0.

Polk State (13-9) plated two more in the fifth on RBI singles from Lewis and Sarah Sosa. Jamie Reinhardt capped the scoring for the Eagles with an RBI single in the sixth.

Oakland Community made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh. After Elyssa Frezza doubled in two runs to break up the shutout, a single by Isabella Asai brought the tying run to the plate. Avery Curtis was able to settle in and strike out Sam Patrick on a 3-2 pitch to end the game.

Oakland held a slight 8-7 edge in hits on Friday. Jamie Glassford had two hits for the Eagles. Asai and Haley Hurley each had two knocks for Oakland.

After a brief break from Citrus Conference action, Polk State will get right back into it on Saturday with a home doubleheader against Santa Fe College. The first game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
