Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN — Polk State Softball has its first Citrus Conference doubleheader sweep of the year. The Eagles won two straight games in their final at-bat against St. Petersburg College on Saturday.
Polk State started the day with its first walk-off and first extra-innings win of the year. After
Sarah Sosa's sacrifice fly tied the game in the seventh,
Chelsi Rae' Hebert's double in the eighth capped the 3-2 comeback win.
St. Petersburg was able to get to Polk State starting pitcher
Tessa Anderson for two runs in the first. Anderson settled in and allowed just three hits the rest of the way.
The Eagles got on the board in the fourth on Hebert's RBI groundout to score
Nayeli Hernandez.
Makenzie Foster started the seventh-inning rally with a one-out walk before pinch runner
Rylee Hartnell scored the tying run.
Savannah Jacobs walked to open the eighth and scored the winning run on Hebert's double.
Hebert and Hernandez each finished with two hits in the win. Ella Carroll plated both runs for St. Petersburg on a two-run double.
The second game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth. Polk State scored four times in the inning for a 4-0 victory.
Leia Hurst ignited the offense and broke the scoreless tie with a two-run blast.
Veronica Fernandez added an RBI double later in the frame before
Destiny Driskell scored on a wild pitch.
With the exception of a sixth-inning jam,
Dee Allen was phenomenal in the circle. She pitched a three-hit shutout without allowing a walk.
Natalie Hiles finished with two of the six hits for the Eagles (18-15, 5-9 Citrus Conference). In the circle, Kayla Ocanas was solid for the Titans, shutting out Polk State for five innings. Only one of the four runs allowed in the sixth was earned.
With the sweep, Polk State has already equaled last season's conference win total. It will try to eclipse it on Tuesday when it visits No. 18 Eastern Florida State College for a doubleheader.
