Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN – Polk State Softball's three-game winning streak ended abruptly on Tuesday. The Eagles were dominated by No. 12 Daytona State College in a doubleheader sweep.
Daytona State found its offense midway through the first game en route to an easy 13-1 victory.
Up 1-0 through three innings, the Falcons blew things open with back-to-back three-run frames in the fourth and fifth. Daytona State pushed across six more runs in the seventh.
Stifled for most of the day, Polk State scored its only run in the fifth as
Chelsi Rae' Hebert bounced an RBI single up the middle to score
Nayeli Hernandez to cut the lead to 7-1. Hebert and
Jamie Reinhardt each had two of the six hits for the Eagles.
Maddie Burdick and Veronica Puckett each went 2-for-4 with three RBIs for Daytona State. Aurielle Reavis scored three runs for the Falcons.
The storyline was similar in the second game. Daytona State needed just six innings to roll to a 16-2 win.
Through three innings, the Eagles (25-26, 12-20 Citrus Conference) were down by only a run. After a two-run home run by Butter Ellerby gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead in the second inning, Polk State cut the lead in half with a run in the third as Hernandez scored on a passed ball.
Daytona State added a run in the fourth before plating four in the fifth to make it 7-1. The Falcons put the game away with nine runs in the sixth.
Rylee Hartnell capped the scoring for Polk State with an RBI single to score
Leia Hurst in the bottom of the inning.
Hernandez and Hartnell each had two of the five hits for the Eagles. Puckett and Kaili Cannon also homered for a Daytona State team that finished with 22 hits. Puckett finished with four RBIs. Azlynn Gomez had four hits.
After splitting a four-game homestand, Polk State will hit the road as it goes for the season sweep of St. Petersburg College on Thursday. Game times are scheduled for 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
