Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN – Polk State Softball's best season in a decade is in the books. The sixth proved to be the magical inning as the Eagles ended the year with a doubleheader sweep on Monday overtime No. 8 Miami Dade College.Â

Polk State opened the day with a thrilling 4-3 victory. The Eagles rallied with four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Nayeli Hernandez started the rally with a lead-off double to centerfield before scoring on a sharp single up the middle from
Jamie Reinhardt to break up the shutout. The Eagles were able to draw even on a bouncer off the bat of
Silvia Franzoni that ate up Miami Dade shortstop Caroline Mito.

The Sharks were one strike away from getting out of the inning tied but
Veronica Fernandez came through with the biggest swing of the game. Fernandez was able to turn on a fastball, driving it to left field for a two-run single.

From the circle,
Dee Allen was outstanding for Polk State. Allen went the distance, allowing three runs (two earned) on just five hits while striking out eight.

Mito provided the offense for Miami Dade. She led off the contest with a solo home run before drawing a bases-loaded walk in the fourth to make it 2-0.Â
Mito recorded two of the five hits for the Sharks and started a seventh-inning rally with a bunt single before coming around to score the game's final run. A double play on a line drive ultimately ended the game.

In the second game, Polk State again rallied behind a big sixth inning. The Eagles pushed across five runs in the inning to complete the sweep, 7-3.
Trailing 3-2 entering the frame,
Chelsi Rae' Hebert and Franzoni opened the inning with consecutive singles before an error loaded the bases.
Makenzie Foster followed with the game-tying RBI single.
For the second straight game, Fernandez provided the go-ahead RBI. Her sacrifice fly put the Eagles ahead for good, 4-3. They, however, weren't done.
Hernandez followed with a two-run double to extend the lead to 6-3. She scored on Reinhardt's RBI single.
The Eagles trailed 1-0 through three innings before taking the lead with two in the fourth.
Karyna Lewis' RBI double tied the game. She came around to score on a single by Foster.
The Sharks regained the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth. A lead-off home run by Gabriela Luz tied the game 2-2.
Franzoni finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Hernandez and Foster each recorded two hits and two RBIs in the win. From the circle, Reinhardt scattered seven hits to pick up the win and complete game.

Polk State wraps up its second season under Head Coach Kevin Lewis with a 29-30 record and seven wins over nationally ranked teams, including five over top-10 teams. The Eagles achieved their highest win total since 2014. They finished 16-24 in Citrus Conference play.
