Polk State Softball sweeps College of Central Florida, achieves highest win total in 10 years

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN — Polk State Softball has achieved its highest win total in 10 years. The Eagles accomplished the feat on Thursday night with a doubleheader sweep of College of Central Florida.

The Eagles hit the 20-win mark with a 9-2 win in the first game.

After College of Central Florida scored the game's first run in the top of the third, Polk State went ahead for good with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Chelsi Rae' Hebert singled home two runs to put the Eagles in front. Karyna Lewis added an RBI single later in the inning.

Polk State added to its lead with four runs in the fourth and two in the fifth. Pitcher Tessa Anderson allowed just two runs while scattering nine hits to pick up the win. At the plate, the Eagles finished with 12 hits.

Nayeli Hernandez, Jamie Reinhardt, Leia Hurst, and Lewis each had two hits. Hebert finished with four RBIs. Hernandez scored three runs; Reinhardt scored twice.

Polk State completed the sweep in dramatic fashion on Lewis' walk-off single. In the highest scoring game of the year, the Eagles rallied for a thrilling 16-15 victory.

In a wild contest, both teams let five-run leads slip away. The Patriots led 7-0 through three and a half innings. Polk State responded with 12 runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Polk State finished with 10 hits in the inning. The Eagles scored the tying and go-ahead runs on passed balls. Savannah Jacobs scored the tying run before Natalie Hiles gave the Eagles their first lead, 8-7.

Trailing 12-7, Central Florida scored three runs in the fifth before storming back in front with a five-run sixth. Down 15-12, Polk State drew even at 15 with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. After Silvia Franzoni singled home the first run of the inning, Jacobs tied it up with a two-run single.

Things seemed destined for extra innings as Central Florida's Morgyn Stevens retired the first two Polk State batters in the bottom of the seventh. Hurst and Hebert followed with consecutive singles before Franzoni drew a walk to load the bases.

That set the stage for Lewis, who lined a 2-2 pitch into left field for the walk-off hit. It was the 17th hit of the game for Polk State.

Hebert and Rylee Hartnell had three hits apiece in the win. Reinhardt, Hurst, Franzoni, and Jacobs each added two hits. Jacobs finished with three RBIs while Hebert scored three runs. Hernandez, Reinhardt, and Franzoni each scored twice.

Leah Clark finished with four RBIs for the Patriots. Amber Daugherty homered in the loss. Madison Vanallen scored four runs.

Despite the offensive outburst, Polk State got two good innings apiece in the circle from Kaylyn Mitchum and Reinhardt. Mitchum allowed just an unearned run. Reinhardt worked two scoreless innings to pick up the win.

The victories snapped a six-game losing streak for Polk State. With the sweep, the Eagles improve to 21-22 overall and 8-16 in Citrus Conference play.

The 21 wins is the most for the program since 2015. The Eagles will try to add to that total on Saturday when they visit No. 19 Santa Fe College for a doubleheader.
