Box Score 2 GAINESVILLE – Polk State Softball continues to show it can play with the nation's best under second-year Head Coach Kevin Lewis. The Eagles won the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday to salvage a split with No. 19 Santa Fe College.
The Eagles bounced back from a loss to open the day with a 5-3 win. Polk State (22-23, 9-17 Citrus Conference) went ahead for good with two runs in the sixth to break a 3-3 tie.
After singles from Veonica Fernandez,
Nayeli Hernandez, and
Jamie Reinhardt loaded the bases,
Leia Hurst's RBI single put the Eagles ahead for good.
Chelsi Rae' Hebert followed with a sacrifice fly to provide some insurance.
Hurst's RBI single capped a two-run first before
Savannah Jacobs led off the second with a solo home run to give Polk State a 3-0 lead. After Tegan Grizzard got Santa Fe on the board with a two-run homer in the bottom of the second, Karris Rhine tied the game with a solo shot in the fifth.
Tessa Anderson and
Jamie Reinhardt combined to hold Santa Fe to just four hits. Hurst finished with three hits and the two RBIs at the plate. Hernandez scored two of the five Polk State runs. Rhine had two hits for the Saints.
Things couldn't have gone much worse for Polk State in the first game as the Eagles were run-ruled in five innings, 9-0.
After scoring twice in the first, Santa Fe opened things up with a five-run second. McKenzie Jewell homered twice for the Saints and finished with five RBIs. Grizzard had an inside-the-park home run in the victory.
The Eagles were held to just three hits by Santa Fe pitcher Ryleigh Bauer. Hernandez, Hurst, and
Silvia Franzoni had the three Polk State hits.
Polk State will remain on the road on Tuesday for a doubleheader at No. 8 Seminole State College of Florida. The teams split the two matchups in Winter Haven earlier this year. Game times are scheduled for 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
