Polk State Softball gets split at No. 7 Seminole State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SANFORD – Polk State Softball ran its win total over nationally ranked teams to five, which now includes three top-10 wins. The Eagles salvaged a doubleheader split at No. 7 Seminole State College of Florida on Tuesday.

Polk State scored three runs in the sixth inning to take the second game, 6-4.

The Eagles (23-24, 10-18 Citrus Conference) trailed 4-3 entering the inning but drew even on Leia Hurst's RBI single. Chelsi Rae' Hebert followed with a two-run double to give the Eagles the lead and cap the scoring.

Down 1-0 after three innings, Polk State drew even with a run in the fourth. Karyna Lewis singled to lead off the inning before scoring on Veronica Fernandez's RBI single.

Polk State took a 3-1 lead in the fifth on Lewis' two-run single. Seminole State reclaimed the lead with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Julianna Nieves' RBI single put the Raiders up 4-3.

The teams combined for 24 hits. Hurst, Hebert, Lewis, and Fernandez each had two hits for Polk State. Michaela Fernandez went 4-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs for Seminole State.
 
Polk State was sloppy in the field to start the day as Seminole State took the first game of the day, 7-3.
 
Four Polk State errors led to three unearned runs for the Raiders – one in the third inning and two in the fourth. Down 3-0 through three innings, the Eagles clawed to within one with two runs in the fourth. After Jamie Reinhardt grounded into an RBI fielder's choice, Hurst came through with an RBI single.
 
That's as close as Polk State would get as Seminole State responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to 6-2. Julianna Nieves highlighted the inning with a two-run double.
 
The teams traded runs in the sixth inning. After Polk State's Savannah Jacobs singled home Destiny Driskell to cut the lead to 6-3, Makayla Nieves answered with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the inning.
 
Jacobs and Silvia Franzoni each had two of the seven hits for the Eagles. Jacobs also scored a run. Anna Green was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Raiders.
 
Polk State has played eight of its last 10 games on the road but will return home for the next four. That begins on Saturday for a Sophomore Day doubleheader against Hillsborough Community College with game times set for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. Sophomores will be recognized 20 minutes prior to the first game.
