Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. - No. 16 Polk State Soccer punctuated a spectacular week of success on the pitch Sunday afternoon with an 8-0 over Spartanburg Methodist College. With the shutout over the Pioneers (9-3), who have appeared consecutive NJCAA National Tournaments, the Eagles (12-1) turned in a 4-0 week.
"Winning four soccer matches in a week is not easy, especially with two of those coming against national tournament caliber teams," said Polk State Head Coach Jessica Belli. "I am extremely proud of how our team matched the intensity they brought to the game on Wednesday to the matches this weekend."
Eagles sophomore forward
Raisa Lugo showcased her prowess as a striker once again, turning in her seventh career hat trick. The Oviedo native also logged three assists to accompany her three goals scored — all in the first half — for a nine-point match. Lugo has now netted 22 goals on the season, just two shy of her freshman total.
After a scoreless 17 minutes to open the match, freshman forward
Lovelie Pierre broke the silence with a goal scored in the 18th minute off a ball from
Sara Estrada. Lugo deposited her first score of the match in the 27th minute off a connection from
Jillian Johnson to make it 2-0. Lugo made it a 3-0 advantage for Polk just 2:25 later with a tally off the assist from Pierre.
Pierre pulled the Eagles ahead 4-0 with her second goal scored of the match off a ball from Lugo in the 33rd minute. Lugo secured the hat trick with eight seconds remaining in the half by burying a look from Johnson for the second time on the day. Johnson now has a team-leading 15 assists on the season.
Freshman midfielder
Yerika Pereira posted her first career multi-goal game with scores in the 63rd and 65th minutes — the second of which was assisted by Lugo. Freshman midfielder
Edjenie Joseph capped off the busy day of offense for Polk in the 66th minute off another helper from Lugo.
The Eagles will cap Region 8 play on Wednesday, as they host No. 18 Daytona State College at 4 p.m. With a win over the Falcons, the Eagles would clinch at least a share of the Region 8 regular season championship.
