Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Polk State Soccer is bound for Evans, Ga. The ninth-ranked Eagles clinched their spot in the final site of the national NJCAA Tournament with a 13-1 rout of Spartanburg Methodist College on Saturday afternoon in the NJCAA South Atlantic District Championship.
The Pioneers found the net in the eighth minute to open the scoring, but the next 13 goals belonged to Polk State. After
Lovelie Pierre evened the match,
Rachelle Caremus put the Eagles ahead for good. By halftime, the lead had grown to 7-1.
"It feels amazing," sophomore forward
Raisa Lugo said. "The girls worked really hard today and throughout the season. We've been wanting this all season. We're excited to get there and to do our best."
Lugo finished with two goals and two assists to help No. 9 Polk State (17-1) build the early lead.
Celine Ottah added four assists in the victory.
Yerika Pereira,
Kayla Banks, and
Jillian Johnson also scored first-half goals. Johnson added an assist.
The second half was the
Edjenie Joseph show. Joseph tallied a hat trick in the second half. Also scoring over the second session were Caremus, Pereira and
Melissa Del Valle.
Lohrane Boaventura recorded two assists in the second half while
Meg Shivraman added one of her own.
"I'm very happy," Joseph said. "This is my first hat trick. I'm thrilled."
The Eagles dominated with 19 shots on goal to just two for Spartanburg Methodist. The trip to the final site for Polk State will be its first since 2009. It will await its seed and opponent.
"We are excited to earn a spot in the national tournament, especially with it being so long since Polk State has been there," Head Coach Jess Belli said. "We'll represent Polk State well. It's particularly exciting to go with this group of girls."
