Giles gets 100th win as Polk State Hoops outlasts USC Salkehatchie

Box Score DAYTONA BEACH -- Polk State Basketball is off to its first 5-0 start for the first time in five years, but that's not all that's significant about Friday's 111-107 win over the University of South Carolina at Salkehatchie to open the Daytona State College Shootout. It was also the 100th win in the career of Head Coach Brandon Giles.

Giles becomes the third straight Polk State head coach to achieve that mark. Predecessor Matt Furjanic won more than 300 games over 17 years at the helm. Giles' late father, Josh Giles, guided the program to 262 wins from 1987 to 2000 and its only three FCSAA titles.

"To every player that's been with us over these last eight years - these 100 wins are not achievable if not for your commitment to my program and what we stand for," Giles said. "Over the years, I have truly admired your will to get through the grind. I appreciate each of you and love you. We are 'Together -  Winners'."

As for the contest itself, it was close throughout. Polk State led 61-59 at halftime but was on the short end of an 89-82 score midway through the second half. The Eagles responded with an 18-5 run and never trailed again.

USC Salkehatchie drew even at 100 but Kellen Cashman's 3-pointer with less than three minutes to go put Polk State ahead for good. Karl Knighten Jr. added a three-point play on the next possession before Jimmy Cami hit a clutch jumper with less than a minute remaining.

Cami finished with a career-high 24 points and 12 rebounds to lead six Polk State players in double figures. Kenny Fields added 23 points and four assists.

Cashman and Fray Nguimbi each scored 16 points. Nguimbi grabbed nine rebounds, narrowly missing a double-double. Knighten scored 13 points. Ty Owens chipped in with 10 points, six assists, and three steals.

As a team, Polk State shot 61% from the field. The Indians shot 50%. USC Salkehatchie's Jai'Viaun Chisolm led all scorers with 26 points.

Polk State will wrap up its stay in Daytona Beach on Saturday against Southern Crescent Technical College. Tip time is set for 12 p.m.
