Box Score LAKE WORTH — Polk State Basketball has won its first nine games for the first time since the turn of the millennium. The Eagles were forced to dig deep on Saturday afternoon but edged Palm Beach State College, 87-81.
Polk State led for most of the second half but the Panthers were able to finally pull in front midway through the half, 61-60.
Fray Nguimbi scored on the next possession to begin a 10-3 run as the Eagles (9-0) stayed ahead for good.
Polk State started strong, leading by double digits in the first half. By halftime, Palm Beach State had drawn to within six at 46-40.
Karl Knighten Jr. led Polk State with 20 points.
Kellen Cashman scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half.
Ty Owens contributed with 13 points.
Nathan Andrice and Nguimbi added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Polk State will have a long drive and a quick turnaround as it puts its perfect record on the line on Sunday against Tallahassee State College in the NJCAA Region 8 Shootout. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
