Box Score ST. PETERSBURG – Polk State Volleyball was unable to take a set on Friday night but showed plenty of fight in its season-opening loss to St. Petersburg College.
The Eagles (0-1) dug themselves deficits early in sets but scratched and clawed to make things interesting. Polk State ultimately fell 19-25, 22-25, 23-25.
Polk State trailed by as many as six points in the opening set but used an 8-2 run to knot the score at 15. Alexia Ortiz Muñoz evened things up with a kill. The Titans, however, responded with the next two points and never trailed again.
In the second, Ortiz Muñoz's kill gave Polk State a 15-14 lead and was part of a 4-0 run. The Eagles took their final lead of the set on a kill by
Isabella Pedrosa to go up 22-21, but St. Petersburg closed the set with four straight points.
In the final set, Polk State trailed by four on multiple occasions. After the Eagles closed to within 21-20 following a long volley that ended on a St. Petersburg error, the Titans pushed the lead to 24-20.
Again, Polk State would not go quietly. Back-to-back kills by Ortiz Muñoz and
Ella Lopez cut the deficit to 24-23 before the Titans put it away.
Lopez and Pedrosa led Polk State with 10 kills apiece. Lopez completed the double-double with a team-leading 15 digs. Pedrosa and
Sofia Sanchez chipped in with 10 digs each.
Polk State returns to Polk County but will remain on the road as it takes on Webber International University JV on Tuesday. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
