Polk Preview (Aug. 25, 2025)

WINTER HAVEN – The Polk State College athletics year officially got underway last week. Polk State Volleyball and Polk State Soccer each kicked off their seasons.

Those seasons will continue this week with three total matches – all at home. Both teams will return to action on Friday afternoon.

WEEKLY SCHEDULE

Friday, Aug. 29 at 4 p.m.: Montgomery College (0-0) at Polk State College (1-0)

PREVIEW

• Polk State Soccer opened the season with a bang. The Eagles blanked Millennia Atlantic University in last week's opener, 8-0. The eight goals and eight-goal margin were the largest for Polk State under Head Coach Dee Shivraman.

• Janessa Crespo shined to begin her sophomore season, finishing with two goals and an assist in the win over Millennia Atlantic. Prior to her five-point effort, Crespo had never scored in her collegiate career.

• Freshmen Marie Narewski and Laura Sofia Males each recorded a goal and an assist in their first collegiate matches. In total, seven Polk State players scored goals in the season opener.

• Sunday's match against Monroe University was called a no contest due to rain in the 63rd minute. The Eagles were trailing the Mustangs 4-3 when things were called.

• Friday's contest against Montgomery College will be the first match of the season for the Raptors. Montgomery finished with a record of 8-9-2 last season.

WEEKLY SCHEDULE

Friday, Aug. 29 at 4 p.m.: University of South Carolina Sumter (2-1) at Polk State College (0-3)

Saturday, Aug. 30 at 2 p.m.: St. Petersburg College (0-0) at Polk State (0-3)

PREVIEW

• Polk State is 0-3 for the first time since the 2023 season. That year, the Eagles bounced back to win seven straight matches.

• Polk State lost a pair of five-set heartbreakers over the weekend in New Port Richey. The Eagles played just two five-set matches all last season. Polk State went 1-1 in those contests.

• Polk State will take on a pair of teams it played last season this week. The Eagles fell to St. Petersburg in straight sets to open the 2024 but swept the University of South Carolina Sumter.

• Entering the week, Polk State has the FCSAA leader in a number of categories. Rezzan Guner leads the state with a .462 hitting percentage. Sarah Boe Soerenson leads the FCSAA in digs per set (7.67); Marina Santos is averaging an FCSAA-best one ace per set and Addison Phillippe is averaging an FCSAA-leading 13.75 assists per set.

• Last season, Alexia Ortiz became the first Polk State player in 12 years to record a triple-double. On Saturday against Pasco-Hernando State College, she finished one assist shy of a second career triple-double, tallying 11 kills, 13 digs and nine assists. Her 4.25 kills per set average ranks second in the FCSAA.
