Simon shines but Polk State Hoops fall to Indian River

WINTER HAVEN — Polk State Basketball's losing streak hit 11 on Saturday. The Eagles rallied to take a second half lead but struggled down the stretch in a 91-74 loss to Indian River State College.

Polk State started strong as it raced to a 10-7 advantage. The Pioneers took a 48-41 lead into the locker room after Polk State's Eric Dailey hit just one of three free-throw attempts at the end of the first half.

The Eagles (4-13, 0-4 Citrus Conference) opened the second half on a 14-5 run to take the lead. Dailey's free throw gave Polk State a 54-53 advantage.

From there on out, however, it was all Indian River State. The Pioneers outscored the Eagles 38-19 to end the contest.

Polk State shot 44% from the field to 41% for Indian River. The Pioneers, however, held a 52-37 rebounding advantage and made 12 more free throws.

Ethan Simon led the Eagles with 21 points and 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season on an efficient 9-for-12 from the field. Dailey added 20 points and six assists. Isaiah McCray chipped in with 10 points in the loss.

Caleb Cameron finished with a game-high 22 points and nine rebounds to lead five Indian River players in double figures. Tamiel Green added 17 points and nine boards of his own.

If the Eagles are to win a game in January, they'll have to do it on the road. Polk State will visit St. Petersburg College on Wednesday in the first of six straight road contests.
