WINTER HAVEN – With Polk State Basketball in full swing, two more teams will open their season this week.

While the hoops team hits the road for a pair of Citrus Conference clashes, Polk State Baseball and Polk State Softball will kick off the 2026 campaigns. Polk State Baseball will play three games in two days in Auburndale to begin the year. Polk State Softball will be in Niceville for four contests in two days.

WEEKLY SCHEDULE

Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m.: Polk State College (4-13, 0-4 Citrus Conference) at St. Petersburg College (4-13, 0-4 Citrus Conference)

Saturday, Jan. 24 at 2 p.m.: Polk State (4-13, 0-4 Citrus Conference) at Miami Dade College (12-7, 3-2 Citrus Conference)

PREVIEW

• Wednesday's contest between Polk State and St. Petersburg College will feature the last two teams without a Citrus Conference win.

• Ethan Simon recorded his fifth double-double of the season in Saturday's loss to Indian River State College, finishing with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Simon averages a team-best 7.4 rebounds per game, which is tied for 10th in the FCSAA. He also leads Polk State with a .546 field goal percentage – good for 12th in the FCSAA.

• Eric Dailey continues to star for Polk State. The Winter Haven native averages a team-best 17.6 points per game and ranks fourth in the FCSAA, shooting 84.1% from the foul line.

• Polk State split its two meetings with St. Petersburg last season but dropped both contests to Miami Dade College. In last season's series with the Titans, the road team won both games.

• St. Petersburg's Nadma Musonda leads the team by averaging 12.4 points per game. In conference play, however, he's averaging 13.3 points and shooting 53% from the field.

• Miami Dade's Randy Smith is averaging 2.4 steals per game. That ranks second in the FCSAA and in the top 20 nationally.

PREVIEW

• Polk State Baseball will open its season in Auburndale at the Florida JUCO Early Bird Kickoff. The Eagles went 2-2 in the season-opening event last season.

• Among the returning players, Zach Lester headlines the Polk State offense. In addition to hitting .311 last season, Lester led the Eagles with eight home runs, 38 RBIs and 20 stolen bases.

• This will mark the third straight season that Polk State and Chipola College have met at the Florida JUCO Early Bird Kickoff. The Eagles are 1-2 in those meeting. Chipola won a 3-1 decision last season. 

• Polk State split a pair of meetings with South Florida State College last season. After falling 9-1 in Winter Haven in February, the Eagles rolled to an 11-5 win in Avon Park in April.

• Polk State's contest with Montgomery College will be its first against an out-of-state opponent since 2024 when it beat Westchester Community College 9-8 on a walk-off bunt single by Aaron Stelogeannis.

• Friday's opener will mark the start of Head Coach Al Corbeil's 16th season at the helm for Polk State. Already the program's all-time wins leader, he'll surpass Bing Tyus for the longest tenured coach in program history.

PREVIEW

• Polk State Softball finished with 29 wins last season – the most for the program since 2014.

• Headlining the returners for Polk State is sophomore catcher Leia Hurst. As a freshman last season, Hurst earned second-team All-Citrus Conference honors, finishing with a team-high 13 doubles while hitting .344 with five home runs and 39 RBIs.

• Northwest Florida State College, an NJCAA Division I program, and Parkland College, an NJCAA Division II program, could both be ranked in the preseason polls. The Eagles won seven games last season against nationally ranked teams.

• Polk State will begin its third season under Head Coach Kevin Lewis. In each of his first two seasons, Polk State was named an NJCAA Academic Team of the Year.

• Northwest Florida State College is the reigning national champions. The Raiders went a perfect 5-0 at the NJCAA Tournament last season.
