WINTER HAVEN – Less than a month remains in the regular season for Polk State Basketball while the diamond sports are just heating up.

Polk State Softball will play its home opener this week. Polk State Baseball, on the other hand, will begin Citrus Conference play with three total games against Eastern Florida State College.

WEEKLY SCHEDULE

Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.: Lake-Sumter State College (9-3) at Polk State College (3-5)

PREVIEW

• After getting swept by Lake-Sumter State College in a doubleheader in Leesburg last week, Polk State will try to return the favor when it hosts the Lakehawks in its season opener on Tuesday. Calonnie Holmes went 5-for-7 with three runs scored and two RBIs during last week's doubleheader. She hit her team-leading second home run of the season in a 3-2 win over Richard Bland College on Sunday.

• Sophomore pitcher Avery Wende, a transfer from Washburn University, picked up her first Polk State win on Sunday, going 5.1 innings and allowing just an earned run in a 3-2 win over Richard Bland.

• Speaking of firsts, Kirsten Aldridge hit her first home run of the season in a 16-2 win over Richard Bland in five innings. The 16 runs were the most scored by Polk State this season while the two runs were the fewest allowed.

• Under Head Coach Kevin Lewis, Polk State is 2-0 in home openers. The Eagles blasted South Georgia State College 12-0 in five innings in last season's home opener. The year prior, the Eagles got 13 strikeouts from Dee Allen in an 8-5 win over Oakland Community College.

• Among FCSAA Division II players, Lake-Sumter State College's Mattie O'Brien leads the state with 23 RBIs – good for second nationally. O'Brien was 3-for-7 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored in the doubleheader against Polk State last week.

Saturday, Feb. 14 at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.: Eastern Florida State College (6-6, 0-0 Citrus Conference) at Polk State (7-4, 0-0 Citrus Conference)

PREVIEW

• Carson Montsdeoca continued to shine for Polk State on the mound. The sophomore from Fort Meade threw four scoreless innings in last week's 14-4 win over Florida Southern College (B). Montsdeoca is tied for third in the FCSAA in both wins (2) and ERA (1.38).

• Roman Corinti is tied for the FCSAA lead with three wins this season. Corinti won his third straight start on Saturday by working six scoreless innings in a 9-6 win over Lake-Sumter State College. Hayden Porter sealed the deal with his first career save.

• Kustarr Webb is now the FCSAA's leading hitter, batting .560. Webb is tied with Marvin Montenegro for the team lead with two home runs. Fabian Gavalo hit his first career home run last week. Gavalo and Hayden Testerman are tied for the team lead with 12 RBIs.

• Polk State went 2-2 against Eastern Florida State College last season. The Eagles won the first meeting in Melbourne on a game-winning inside-the-park grand slam by Andy Schroeder. Polk State capped the season series with what would be Head Coach Al Corbeil's 500th career victory. Polk State also split two meetings with St. Johns River State College last season.

• St. Johns River State's Connor Hill is tied for the FCSAA Division II lead with two saves this season. Hill has not allowed an earned run in four appearances. 

• Eastern Florida State's Parker Trowbridge currently leads the FCSAA with a 0.69 ERA. In 13 innings this season, he has allowed just one earned run. On the bases, Chris Carroll leads the Titans and is tied for third in the FCSAA with eight stolen bases.

Saturday, Feb. 14 at 2 p.m.: No. 12 Daytona State College (19-5, 8-2 Citrus Conference) at Polk State College (4-19, 0-10 Citrus Conference)

PREVIEW

• Polk State could be eliminated from postseason contention as early as Saturday. The Eagles would be eliminated with a loss to Daytona State College, wins by Indian River State College over Miami Dade College and Hillsborough College and a Miami Dade win over St. Petersburg College.

• Polk State's Isaiah McCray continues to be one of the top shooters in the FCSAA. McCray ranks third in the state in 3-point percentage (.415) and fifth in free-throw percentage (.872).

• Polk State is the only team in the FCSAA with two players in the top 10 in scoring. Eric Dailey ranks eighth in the state, averaging 17 points per game. McCray is 10th, averaging 15.9.

• After six straight road games, Polk State will play five of its final six regular season games at home. 

• Daytona State College's Tyrese Lacey leads the nation, averaging 7.6 assists per game. Lacey finished with 10 points and 10 assists in a 107-63 win over Polk State on Jan. 14.
