Polk Preview (Jan. 26, 2026)

WINTER HAVEN – After opening the season in Niceville, Polk State Softball will be idle this week. For Polk State's two men's sports, however, that won't be the case.

Polk State Basketball will continue a lengthy road stretch while Polk State Baseball is home for the first time after a winning week in Auburndale. The two programs will combine for six games this week.

WEEKLY SCHEDULE

Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 3 p.m.: Hillsborough College (2-1) at Polk State College (2-1)

Friday, Jan. 30 at 1 p.m.: Pasco-Hernando State College (2-1) at Polk State (2-1)

Saturday, Jan. 31 at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.: Polk State (2-1) at Pasco-Hernando State College (2-1)

PREVIEW

• After letting a six-run lead slip away in the season opener, Polk State won twice on Saturday to finish 2-1 at the Florida JUCO Early Bird Kickoff.

• Anthony Schatz faced just two batters over the weekend, but struck out the lone hitter he faced to collect the first save of the season for Polk State against South Florida State College on Saturday. The Eagles have had the FCSAA saves leader in each of the last four seasons.

• Through three games, Bradyn Potter and Hayden Testerman are among the Polk State players off to strong starts. Each finished with five hits over the weekend. Testerman leads the team with a .455 batting average. Potter was one of three Polk State players to homer over the weekend.

• Carson Montsdeoca shined in his opening day start for the Eagles. The University of Florida transfer allowed just a hit in four shutout innings in Friday's loss to Chipola College.

• Polk State will try to win its second straight home opener on Tuesday as it hosts Hillsborough College. The Eagles beat Lake-Sumter State College in walk-off fashion in last season's home opener.

• Infielder Nick Palmi has been the big bat so far for Hillsborough. Through three games, he's 4-for-7 with a home run, three RBIs, four runs scored and two stolen bases.

• The reigning NJCAA Division II national champion, Pasco-Hernando State College took all three meetings from Polk State last season. The Bobcats already have two wins over FCSAA Division I competition, beating both Miami Dade College and State College of Florida.

WEEKLY SCHEDULE

Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 5:30 p.m.: Polk State College (4-15, 0-6 Citrus Conference) at Hillsborough College (10-9, 2-4 Citrus Conference)

Saturday, Jan. 31 at 2 p.m.: Polk State (4-15, 0-6 Citrus Conference) at Eastern Florida State College (14-6, 3-3 Citrus Conference)

PREVIEW

• Polk State is in the midst of a 13-game losing streak. It is the longest skid of Head Coach Brandon Giles' tenure.

• Forward Jimmy Cami narrowly missed recording his first double-double of the season in Saturday's loss to Miami Dade College. Cami finished with nine points and a season-high 11 rebounds. Cami set the Polk State single-game rebounding record last season with 27 in a win over DME Academy.

• Guard Isaiah McCray continues to be a marksman for Polk State. He ranks in the top 10 in the FCSAA in both 3-pointers made (48) and 3-point percentage (.400). McCray was 4-for-7 from deep in last week's loss at St. Petersburg College.

• Hillsborough and Polk State split the two meetings last season with each winning on the road in contests decided by three points or less. Eastern Florida State College has won nine straight in its series with the Eagles.

• Polk State will face the top two scorers in the FCSAA this week. Eastern Florida State's Sean Register Jr. averages an FCSAA-leading 24.1 points per game – good for third nationally. Hillsborough's Chandler Davis ranks second in the FCSAA and fourth nationally, averaging 23.2 points per contest.
