Volleyball honors sophomores with convincing win over Indian River

Box Score WINTER HAVEN - Polk State Volleyball continued to ride the upward momentum of the week with a dominant 3-0 win over Indian River State College on Sophomore Night on Saturday.

The Eagles (10-11, 6-7 Suncoast Conference) handled the Pioneers (5-20, 1-13 Suncoast) by set scores of 25-17, 25-18, and 25-15.

Polk dominated the service line throughout the match, with a total of seven service aces. Four of those seven aces came in the first set, with two being registered by sophomore setter Maria Luiza Barreis

"After beating Miami Dade Thursday, we had the confidence that we could do anything," said Barreis. "Being able to come home and play in front of this great crowd was something special."

An Indian River attack error clinched the opening set for the Eagles 25-17.

The second set was tight out the gate, with the Eagles holding a 4-3 lead. However, the Eagles compiled a 7-1 run to open things up. Consecutive kills by sophomores Andrea Da Silva and Kaila Ru ended the set with a Polk win, 25-18.

The Eagles soared out to a quick 8-0 advantage to start the third set, as the Pioneers never whittled the deficit to less than seven for the remainder of the session. An emphatic kill by Barreis concluded her spectacular sophomore night and clinched both the set and the match for Polk 25-15.

"There are so many tough teams in this conference, so you have to play hard every night," said Polk State Head Coach German Del Valle. "Indian River is a team that plays hard so I am glad we came out and brought intensity tonight and we honored our graduating sophomores well."

Polk concludes regular season and Suncoast play on Thursday in Fort Myers vs. No. 2 Florida SouthWestern College. Match time inside Alco Arena is set for 6 p.m.
