Box Score 2 HENDERSON, Nev. – Already down a team captain for the season, Polk State Volleyball continues to battle injuries and top-15 teams simultaneously. Multiple players were forced to leaves matches on Thursday as the Eagles went 0-2 on the first day of the College of Southern Nevada Coyote Classic.
No. 10 Polk State (3-4) has now dropped four straight following 3-1 losses to No. 9 Utah State University Eastern and No. 15 Seward County (Kan.) Community College. In each case, the Eagles fell behind by two sets and rallied to win the third before dropping the fourth.
"We're as injury-riddled as I can remember during my time here, but our players continue to battle," Head Coach
German Del Valle said. "It won't be easy, but we have to get some rest and try to get two wins tomorrow."
The day started against Utah State Eastern. After dropping the first two sets, the Eagles dominated the third set for a 25-15 victory. The Golden Eagles put things away with a 25-18 win in the fourth.
Carolina Guerreiro recorded her first career double-double with team-highs of 11 kills and 11 digs in the loss.
Giuliana Jaku added 10 digs. Captain
Kaila Ru finished with eight kills.
The storyline was similar against Seward Community. The Eagles again fell behind by two sets after dropping a 27-25 heartbreaker in the second. Polk State won the third set 25-20 and clawed their way back into it after falling behind 16-3 in the fourth, but ultimately lost by a 25-20 score.
"Utah State Eastern and Seward County are both very good teams and played better than we did today," Del Valle added. "We have to put it behind us and try to head home on a high note."
Polk State will wrap up the Coyote Classic on Friday with matches against Arizona Western College and Glendale Community College.
