Box Score DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – No. 15 Polk State Volleyball came up short in a battle of NJCAA-ranked programs, falling on the road Wednesday night to No. 17 Daytona State College in four sets. All three Citrus Conference losses the Eagles have suffered this season have come on the road.
After taking the opening set 25-22, Polk State (10-6, 6-3 Citrus) dropped the sequential three sets by margins of five or less to Daytona (15-6, 6-3 Citrus).
"This is the most competitive conference in the country and Daytona is a very talented, well coached team," shared Polk State Head Coach Dayanna Barbosa. "We had the chance to close out sets and did not execute the way we needed to. Hopefully we can grow from this and move forward."
The Eagles evenly distributed their attack throughout the opening session, featuring three players with four or more kills. Daytona State responded to even the match with a 25-21 win in set two.
Sophomore outside hitter
Keionna Mackey kept the Eagles competitive throughout the remainder of the match, turning in a 10-kill third set and seven-kill fourth set on her way to a career-best 27 kills. However, Polk State committed seven attack errors in both the third and fourth sets, as Daytona took the sessions by scores of 25-22 and 25-20, respectively.
Sophomore outside hitter
Carolina Guerreiro Cruz turned in 16 kills of her own, her most since Aug. 26.
Captain setter
Madi O'Sullivan notched a season-high 49 assists in the defeat. Fellow captain
Irene Mostardini led the way in digs with 22, while sophomore
Karolina Zubkova was right behind her with 21.
The Eagles look to bounce back at the Health Center, where they have not lost a match this season. Polk State hosts Santa Fe College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
