ST. PETERSBURG - Polk State Baseball saw its winning streak brought to a halt at eight on Saturday afternoon, as the Eagles were topped by St. Petersburg College 13-7 to even the series at a game apiece.
Â
The Eagles (20-12, 5-1 Suncoast) totaled seven runs on 11 hits, with seven of those going for extra bases. However, the Titans (8-18, 2-4 Suncoast) were able to amass 13 runs on 19 hits as an offensive unit — their most hits this season against an NJCAA opponent. Additionally, SPC pitchers struck out Polk hitters a collective 13 times.
Â
With the contest tied 2-2 heading to the top of the fourth, the Eagles took the lead 4-2 with a pair of runs in the frame. However, the Titans answered in the bottom of the inning with five runs to pull back ahead 7-4, never relinquishing the lead from that point on.
Â
St. Petersburg was able to tally at least one run off each of the five pitchers Polk threw. Four different hitters had multi-RBI performances for the Titans.
Â
Polk was able to bring the deficit within two with a run in the top of the seventh that made it 9-7. However, SPC extended its advantage quickly with a trio of runs in the bottom of the frame.
Â
Aaaron Stelogeannis and
Aris Rivera each recorded two hits and drove home a pair of runs. Rivera notched a double and launched his second home run of the season.
Evan Wainman also notched two hits and had an RBI to his credit.
Â
The Eagles look to respond back at Bing Tyus Yard in Winter Haven on Monday. First pitch against St. Petersburg is set for 5 p.m.
