White's heroics lift Polk State Hoops past Santa Fe

Box Score GAINESVILLE — Entering Saturday, Polk State Basketball was still looking for its first road win, but Cole White changed that with an improbable shot with less than a second remaining. His contested hook gave the Eagles a thrilling 84-82 victory over Santa Fe College.

After Santa Fe converted a game-tying layup with 13 seconds remaining and used its two fouls to give, Polk State (10-8, 2-3 Citrus Conference) found itself inbounding from the end line with less than four seconds to play. Ty Owens lobbed a pass to White in the paint. As White drifted toward the foul line, his contested right-handed hook went down with just 0.7 seconds left.

"We got the bear off of our back," Head Coach Brandon Giles said. "Hopefully a good hard-fought win at the buzzer with all 18 guys feeling good about themselves and the team will give us the momentum we need to win more games."

Since opening Citrus Conference play with a win, the Eagles had dropped three straight entering Saturday. Polk State trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half. The Eagles rallied to briefly take the lead and trailed by a narrow 44-41 margin at halftime.

Dominick Nelson led Polk State with 27 points in the win. White added 13 points in the win. Derrick Jones Jr. narrowly missed scoring in double figures for a second straight game, finishing with nine points.

Polk State will look to even its conference record on Tuesday as it travels to take on No. 2 Daytona State College. Tip time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
