Box Score 2 CLEARWATER – For the second day in a row, Polk State Softball settled for a split at the JUCO Kickoff. The Eagles busted out the big bats in a 17-10 win over Tallahassee Community College to start the day before falling to Parkland College in the tournament finale, 14-3.
Polk State (2-2) scored in each of the first four innings to start the day in a battle of Eagles. After giving up six runs in the bottom of the third to watch a 5-1 lead evaporate, Polk State went ahead for good with a monster nine-run fourth.
After three straight singles and an error pushed across the first run of the inning,
Natalie Hiles evened things up with an RBI single.
Veronica Fernandez followed by drawing a bases-loaded walk to put Polk State ahead for good.
The Eagles, however, were just getting started.
Kagan Dudney added a two-run single.
Donnea Allen followed with an RBI single later in the frame.
Despite allowing nine earned runs and seven walks,
Ray Hansen picked up her second win in as many days for Polk State. As a team, the Eagles finished with 15 hits. Every starter drove in a run.
Dudney had a big day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Sophia Ryan finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored for Tallahassee Community. Pyper Smith had a two-run single during a six-run third that gave Tallahassee the lead.
Things did not go as well for Polk State in the second game of the day as it fell to Parkland College, the No. 4 team in the NJCAA Division II Poll. The Cobras needed just six innings to down the Eagles.
After Parkland jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first, Polk State got one back when Allen singled home Hernandez in the bottom of the inning. Following a scoreless second, Parkland seized control with five runs in the third.
Leading 10-1, the Cobras were one out away from ending things in the fifth, but Hudson was able to briefly keep the Eagles alive with a two-run single. Hernandez scored two of the three runs for Polk State.
As a team, Parkland finished with 18 hits. Six different players had multi-hit games for the Cobras. Alisha Frederick and Lizzie Stiverson each finished 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored for Parkland. Emma Mason added two RBIs.
After four games in two days, Polk State will get an extended rest. The Eagles are scheduled to return to action on Feb. 16 for a doubleheader against St. Thomas University JV.
