Polk State Softball sweeps St. Thomas

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - Polk State Softball showed little rust after a nearly three-week hiatus, trekking down to South Florida to take a pair of games over St. Thomas University JV by scores of 15-4 and 6-4, respectively.

The Eagles (4-2) drove in their 21 runs on 22 hits, while limiting the Bobcats (0-2) to just eight runs on six hits over the two games.

GAME ONE: Polk State 15, St. Thomas 4 (5 Innings)

Polk State turned in six-run innings in the top of the second and sixth frames, respectively, to power itself to victory.

The Eagles' one through four hole hitters hit a collective 10-for-14 (.714) with six runs batted in and 10 runs scored. This included sophomore Jillian Hudson, who was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, which tied her career-high in runs driven in.

Freshman left-handed pitcher Jamie Reinhardt was tough at the plate and in the circle for Polk, going 3-for-3 with a walk, three runs scored, and an RBI in the batter's box. In the circle, Reinhardt struck out two and allowed four earned on four hits while walking just one through five innings pitched. The Boone High School graduate improved to 2-1 on the season with the win.

"The bats were alive the first game and we executed the plan well," said Polk State Head Coach Kevin Lewis. "We put a lot of pressure on the defense and with great pitching from freshman Jamie Reinhardt. We were able to secure and cruise to a nice victory."

GAME TWO: Polk State 6, St. Thomas 4

Polk jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first via an RBI double by Reinhardt and a sacrifice fly RBI by Hudson. However, the Bobcats battled and kept pace with the Eagles, plating a single run in four of the first five frames to trail just 5-4 entering the sixth inning.

A Bobcats' error allowed Ray Hansen to cross and give the Eagles an insurance run.

Freshman righty Donnea Allen competed hard on the mound to help keep the Eagles out in front, striking out a career-high eight over her complete-game victory, which was the first of her collegiate career.

"In the second game, we were a little tested," added Lewis. "We came out flat but put the pressure on right away. Dee Allen had a rough first inning outing but composed herself well and pitched very well the rest of the game. What impressed me the most about her is she didn't give up and kept battling. We were able to get some key hits at the right time, especially from sophomore Jill Hudson, who came in clutch."

Hudson logged another three-RBI game on the day, finishing 2-for-3 at the plate in the second contest. Nayeli Hernandez tattooed her second triple of the season in the victory.

Polk State opens up play at the Diamond Plex on Sunday against North Idaho College. Game times are scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m.
