Polk State Softball pounced by Patriots

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Not much went Polk State Softball's way on Thursday evening at the Diamond Plex. The Eagles were unable to keep pace with No. 9 College of Central Florida, getting swept by scores of 19-2 and 8-0, respectively.

The Eagles (6-8, 0-4 Citrus) were outhit by the Patriots (13-5, 4-0 Citrus) 35-5 on the night, including 16-2 on extra-base hits.

GAME ONE: Central Florida 19, Polk State 2 (5 Innings)

The Eagles trailed just 5-1 entering the top of the fourth frame, where the Patriots scored 12 runs on 13 hits to bust things open 17-1.

Jillian Hudson and Gianna Scopano each recorded RBIs for Polk, with Scopano notching a pinch-hit RBI double to left in the bottom of the fourth.

Veronica Fernandez was 1-for-1 with a run scored and a walk in the loss.

GAME TWO: Central Florida 8, Polk State 0 (6 Innings)

The Eagles were able to keep things competitive with the Patriots through the first four frames, trailing just 2-0. Donnea Allen settled in for back-to-back scoreless frames in the top of the third and fourth frames, highlighted by a 5-4-3 inning-ending double play in the top of the fifth turned by Scopano, who finished 1-for-2 at the plate in the second game.

The Patriots used another big inning to open things up, crossing five runs on six hits and three Polk errors in the top of the fifth to grow their lead to 7-0.

Allen took the loss in game two, conceding eight earned over six innings while walking and striking out three batters each.

Polk State looks to get in the win column in Citrus Conference play when the Eagles head to Gainesville on Saturday to face off with Santa Fe College. Game times are scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m.
