Polk State Softball flexes offensive muscle but swept by Seminole State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SANFORD – Outs were again hard to come by for Polk State Softball on Tuesday, but the Eagles flexed their offensive muscles. Although Polk State was swept in a doubleheader by No. 13 Seminole State College of Florida, it scored six runs in each of the two games – a high this season in Citrus Conference play.

Polk State (6-10, 0-6 Citrus) dropped the opener by a 13-6 score but led midway through and finished the game with 15 hits. In the second game, Polk State fell in five innings, 14-6.

In the first game, Jillian Hudson got the scoring started in the first with a solo home run -- the first by a Polk State player this season. Seminole State responded with four runs in the bottom of the second, but the Eagles pushed across four in the fourth to go back in front.

Natalie Hiles and Ray Hansen used RBI singles to cut the lead to one before an RBI double by Nayeli Hernandez evened the contest, 4-4. A Jamie Reinhardt infield single scored Hernandez and put the Eagles back in front.

Unfortunately for Polk State, the lead was short-lived. The Raiders responded with seven runs in the bottom of the inning. A bases-loaded walk to Kiara Beltre put Seminole State ahead for good. Cassidy Ross followed with a two-run single to highlight the frame.

After Polk State left the bases loaded in the fifth, Hudson capped the scoring for the Eagles with an RBI single in the sixth to score Donnea Allen. Hiles finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the loss. Hernandez, Reinhardt, Hudson, Hansen, and Kagan Dudney each recorded two hits for the Eagles.

Ross finished with three RBIs for the Raiders. Mel Bullock went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in the second inning and four RBIs in the win.

Although the score was similar in the second game, things weren't nearly as competitive as Seminole State needed just five innings to secure the run-rule victory. The Raiders scored in each of the five frames, which included another seven-run fourth.

Down 5-0, Polk State got on the board in the top of the fourth on a Veronica Fernandez single that scored Hudson. After the Raiders pushed the lead to 12-1 in the bottom of the frame, the Eagles showed fight with a five-run fifth.

Reinhardt and Hudson came through with back-to-back sacrifice flies before Dudney added an RBI double and Hiles an RBI single. Dudney scored on a fielder's choice later in the inning.

Beltre finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI for Seminole State. Ross added two RBIs. Izabell LaRoche finished with three RBIs.

Polk State has now lost eight straight games and remains the only winless team in Citrus Conference play. The Eagles will continue a busy week on Thursday as they travel to Santa Fe College to make up a doubleheader originally scheduled for last week. Game times are set for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
