Box Score 2 FORT PIERCE — A road doubleheader against a top-five opponent proved to be an unenviable mission for shorthanded Polk State Softball on Tuesday. The Eagles were run-ruled in both contests, falling by scores of 8-0 and 12-1.
With just nine players at their disposal, the Eagles (8-20, 2-16 Citrus Conference) were their own worst enemy in the first game. Six Polk State players combined for eight errors, leading to seven unearned runs for the Pioneers.
Donnea Allen took the loss the circle but yielded just one earned run on seven hits and one walk while striking out three. Indian River scored two unearned runs in each of the first two innings. Four runs in the fourth allowed the Pioneers to get the run-rule victory in five innings.
The Eagles managed just three hits against Indian River starter J'dah Girigorie.
Jamie Reinhardt,
Nayeli Hernandez, and
Veronica Fernandez each singled in the loss. Adrianna Portanova went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI for Indian River.
After plating three runs in the first inning, the Pioneers blew the second game open with six runs in the second. They outhit the Eagles 12-2 while Polk State committed five errors.
The Eagles finally broke through offensively with a run in the third.

For the second game in a row, Indian River scored seven unearned runs and won in five innings. Reinhardt took the loss. At the plate, she had both Polk State hits.
Nyasia Williams homered for the Pioneers in the victory. Williams, Zoe Thornsbury, and Ciara Gendron each finished with two RBIs.
With a banged up lineup, the Eagles hope to get a decent amount of rest. Polk State returns to action on Saturday at home against State College of Florida. Start times are scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
