Polk State Softball fights valiantly in losses to SCF

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN – Wins have been hard to come by in Citrus Conference play for Polk State Softball, but that hasn't stopped the Eagles from battling until the very end. Although Polk State was unable to come up with a win in its doubleheader against State College of Florida on Sunday, it showed resiliency and resolve throughout the day.

Polk State (8-22, 2-18 Citrus) fell in extra innings in the first game 4-3 after drawing even with two runs in the seventh. Trailing 3-1 entering the bottom of the inning, Polk State cut the lead in half on a Kagan Dudney single. Dudney came around to tie the game on Nayeli Hernandez's RBI triple.

Polk State had a chance to walk it off later in the inning, but a strikeout and an offensive interference call ended the threat. The Manatees went ahead for good in the top of the eighth on Janessa Benavides' RBI single. The Eagles put the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the inning, but Hernandez flied out to deep centerfield to end the contest.

Donnea Allen gave another strong start for Polk State in the circle, going the distance, allowing four runs on eight hits and eight walks. Allen struck out five in the contest.

At the plate, Allen scored two of the three runs for Polk State. Jamie Reinhardt finished 3-for-5 for the Eagles. Polk State finished with six hits.

Reninhardt got the scoring started with an RBI single to score Allen in the bottom of the fourth. After State College of Florida drew even in the fifth, it took the lead for the first time in the top of the sixth on a solo home run from Alissa Kessler during what would be a two-run inning.

Karsyn Rutherford finished 2-for-5 for SCF with an RBI triple to tie the game. Brielle Bostow worked six innings of relief to pick up the win. Julianna Stachowicz worked a scoreless eighth to pick up the save.

In the second game, SCF used a three-run home run from Kessler in the sixth inning to break a 6-6 tie. The Manatees added three runs in the seventh in a 12-6 win to cap the day.

Polk State twice drew even after trailing by multiple runs. Down 4-1 in the third, Hernandez singled home Ray Hansen to cut the deficit to two. That was followed by a game-tying two-run triple from Veronica Fernandez.

After State College of Florida went back in front with two runs in the top of the fourth, Polk State answered with two in the bottom of the fourth on a double by Dudney. Hansen and Reinhardt scored on the play.

Reinhardt, Hernandez, and Hansen each scored two runs in the loss. Hansen, Dudney, and Jillian Hudson each had two hits. Hansen doubled twice.

Kessler finished 3-for-5 with six RBIs for the Manatees. Rutherford went 3-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored. Ryleigh Bennett added three hits and three runs scored.

With the doubleheader originally scheduled for Saturday moved to Sunday, Polk State will have just one day of rest before traveling to face Daytona State College for a doubleheader on Tuesday. Game times are scheduled for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
