Pitching shines but Polk State Softball can't avoid sweep in Daytona

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DAYTONA BEACH – Polk State Softball pitchers Jamie Reinhardt and Donnea Allen gave their team a fighting chance on Tuesday, but in the end, the Eagles couldn't muster enough offense. Polk State was swept by Daytona State College in a doubleheader.

In two low-scoring affairs, Polk State could not get the bats going. The Eagles dropped the contests by scores of 3-2 and 4-2.

The day started with a pitcher's duel between Reinhardt and Daytona State's Allizaya Talamantes. Tied 1-1 entering the inning, Daytona State went ahead for good with a pair of runs in the fifth on a single by Logan Ringel and a steal of home by Kalli Cannon.

Polk State (8-24, 2-20 Citrus Conference) answered with its second unearned run of the day in the sixth inning as Jillian Hudson scored on Ray Hansen's RBI groundout. It was the fifth Daytona State error of the contest. After the Eagles left Veronica Fernandez at third in the sixth, they went in order in the seventh to end the contest.

The Eagles drew first blood with an unearned run scored by Gianna Scopano in the second before the Falcons tied things up on Kiera Mainolfi's RBI single in the fourth. The teams combined for just nine hits. Reinhardt, Fernandez, Hansen, and Allen each recorded hits for Polk State.

Reinhardt took the loss despite pitching admirably for the Eagles. She didn't yield a hit until the fourth inning, allowing three runs on just five hits and no walks while striking out two. Talamantes allowed just two unearned runs on four hits while striking out four.

After being stymied by Daytona State pitcher Emma Ream for six innings in the second game, Polk State made things interesting in the seventh. The Eagles were able to push two runs across and put the tying run in scoring position.

Trailing 4-0, Nayeli Hernandez broke up the shutout with an RBI bunt single. Following a pop out, Fernandez plated the second run by drawing a bases-loaded walk. Scopano grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game.

Daytona State manufactured its runs in the second game. The Falcons got on the board with a sacrifice fly in the first before adding two runs in the fourth and another in the sixth.

Polk State was held without a hit until the fifth when Natalie Hiles singled with one out. Hiles had two of the five hits for the Eagles.

Allen shined in the circle, allowing just two earned runs on four hits and three walks with four strikeouts in six innings for Polk State but took the loss.

Mainolfi, Sky Ramos, and Cannon each finished with a hit and an RBI for the Falcons. Reinhardt and Fernandez finished with hits in both games for Polk State.

Things won't get any easier for Polk State this week. The Eagles will return home for a doubleheader against No. 3 Florida SouthWestern State College on Thursday. Game times are set for 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
