Box Score 2 GAINESVILLE – Polk State Softball continued to show fight on Thursday, but that wasn't enough to keep the losing streak from reaching double digits. The Eagles lost their 10th straight game and remained winless in Citrus Conference play as they were swept in a doubleheader by Santa Fe College.
Just two days after scoring six runs in consecutive games against a top-15 team, Polk State (6-12, 0-8 Citrus Conference) couldn't muster much offense. The Eagles fell in both contests of a doubleheader to Santa Fe by 7-2 and 4-1 scores.
Polk State dropped the first game in what was a pitchers' duel most of the way. Santa Fe finally broke through against
Jamie Reinhardt in the bottom of the third with two runs on RBI doubles from Sydney Fowler and Ariana Wright.
That score remained until the bottom of the fifth when the Saints created some breathing room with three runs to increase their lead to 5-0. Wright plated two more with a double to cap the inning.
The Eagles finally broke through in the top of the sixth. Two days after hitting her first collegiate home run,
Jillian Hudson nearly left the yard again, belting a two-run double that scored
Nayeli Hernandez and Reinhardt.
Santa Fe was able to get the runs back in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch. Polk State put a pair of runners in scoring position in the seventh but could get neither home.
The Eagles managed just four hits in the loss. Fowler, Wright, and Karris Rhine each finished with a pair of hits for Santa Fe.
In the second game, Polk State trailed 4-0 entering the seventh inning, but managed to bring the tying run to the plate.
After leading off the inning with a double, Hudson came around to score on a two-out RBI single by
Veronica Fernandez. Fernandez was caught in a rundown but managed to reach second safely. Catcher
Natalie Hiles kept Polk State's hopes alive by drawing a walk but
Ray Hansen grounded back to the circle to end the game.
The second game was another low-scoring affair. For four innings, Polk State pitcher
Donnea Allen kept Santa Fe at bay. An RBI double by Wright in the third had accounted for all the offense to that point.
The Saints created some breathing room with three runs in the fifth. Fowler's RBI single was followed by a passed ball by Hiles before Wright plated her fifth run of the day with a groundout.
Prior to the seventh, Polk State's best scoring opportunity came in the top of the third. With two runners in scoring position in a scoreless game,
Gianna Scopano scorched Ryleigh Bauer's pitch to the left side, but Santa Fe shortstop Aliana Mercado made an excellent diving play and threw to first to rob her of a hit and to end the threat.
Allen had her best pitching effort in Citrus Conference play for Polk State, throwing six innings while allowing just two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven. Reinhardt, Hudson, and Fernandez had the only three hits for the Eagles.
Polk State will try to get back in the win column and end the lengthy losing streak on Saturday as it returns home to host Daytona State College in a doubleheader. Game times are set for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
