Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN – Polk State Softball gave the No. 4 team in the country plenty of resistance on Tuesday but could not come home with a win. The Eagles were swept in their doubleheader with Indian River State College.
Although the pitching was solid, Polk State didn't score a run on Tuesday. The Eagles were shut out by scores of 7-0 and 6-0.
In the first game, Polk State pitcher
Jamie Reinhardt was able to keep the Pioneers from putting together the big inning. Indian River, however, pulled away gradually.
After scoring two runs in the first, Indian River added one run in each of the final five innings. Three errors by the Eagles (9-37, 3-33 Citrus Conference) led to two unearned runs for the Pioneers.
Gianna Scopano recorded the lone hit for Polk State in the loss.
Camrie Todd, Maddox Thomas, J'dah Girigorie, and Sarah Phipps each had two hits for Indian River State. Girigorie and Todd each scored twice. Phipps finished with two RBIs.
Scoreless through two innings, Indian River State broke things open in the second game with a four-run third inning, highlighted by Todd's three-run homer. Todd added a solo blast in the fifth inning.
Donnea Allen gave a gritty effort from the circle for Polk State, allowing six runs on 12 hits and two walks while striking out five. Allen did a nice job minimizing the damage throughout the contest.
Polk State managed seven hits in the contest with Reinhardt going a perfect 4-for-4.
Nayeli Hernandez, Scopano, and
Kagan Dudney added hits in the loss.
Polk State will have an extended rest before returning to action on Saturday at State College of Florida. Game times are scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
