Box Score 2 BRADENTON – Saturday may have been one of the most satisfying days of the season for Polk State Softball. The Eagles found the big hit late to sweep the doubleheader against State College of Florida.
The Eagles (11-37, 5-33 Citrus Conference) pulled away late in the first game for a 6-3 win. In the second game, Polk State pushed across two runs in the seventh for a thrilling 6-5 victory.
In the first game,
Ray Hansen's RBI single in the fifth inning scored
Veronica Fernandez to break a 3-3 tie and put the Eagles ahead for good. Polk State would add two insurance runs in the seventh with RBI singles from
Gianna Scopano and
Jillian Hudson.
Jamie Reinhardt picked up the win, allowing just two earned runs on just four hits. Reinhardt also went 1-for-4 at the plate with a pair of runs scored.
Nayeli Hernandez added two hits and two runs scored in the win. Fernandez also scored a pair of runs in the win.
All four hits for the Manatees came during a three-run fourth inning as State College of Florida drew even. The Eagles were able to manufacture runs in the first, third, and fourth innings to take an early 3-0 lead.
In the second game, it looked as though SCF's Alissa Kessler would be the hero. Her RBI double in the bottom of the sixth gave the Manatees a 5-4 lead, but the Eagles came through clutch in the top of the seventh.
Hernandez was able to draw a one-out walk before back-to-back singles from Reinhardt and Scopano loaded the bases. Polk State was able to tie the game on a fielder's choice off the bat of Hudson as SCF shortstop Haley Rosenbaum's throw home was not in time.
Kagan Dudney gave the Eagles the lead with a go-ahead sacrifice fly.
Polk State trailed 4-1 through five innings before drawing even in the top of the sixth on a three-run double from
Natalie Hiles. Hernandez scored two runs in the victory.
Picking up the win from the circle was starting pitcher
Donnea Allen. Allen was able to work around seven hits and four walks to allow just two earned runs while striking out five in her complete-game victory.
After winning just two of its first 33 Citrus Conference games, Polk State has now won three of its last five. The Eagles play their next four games at home, beginning on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Seminole State College of Florida.Â
