WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Polk State Softball struggled on Saturday afternoon against a Santa Fe team that has been trending upwards in the Citrus Conference landscape. The Eagles were swept in the doubleheader by the No. 14 Saints by scores of 11-1 and 9-0, respectively.
The Eagles (8-32, 2-28 Citrus) mustered just one run on five hits over the two games, including being no-hit by Santa Fe in the five inning run-rule loss in game two.Â
Game One: No. 14 Santa Fe College 11, Polk State 1 (6 Innings)
The Eagles struck first in the bottom of the first when
Nayeli Hernandez smacked her eighth double of the season into left field to bring home Natlaie Hiles.
The lead was short lived, as the Saints put four across in the top of the second, three of which were scored on a three-run home run by Sydney Fowler. A grand slam home run by Chloey O'Doniel in top of the fifth opened up an 8-1 lead for Santa Fe, who cruised from that point on.
Hernandez and Hiles each went 2-for-3 at the plate for Polk in game one.
Game Two: No. 14 Santa Fe 9, Polk State 0 (5 Innings)
Freshman pitcher
Donnea Allen cruised through the first three innings of play for Polk, allowing just two hits and striking out three.
However, the timely hitting of the Santa Fe bats, as well as a series of errors by the Eagles, resulted in seven runs scoring for the Saints on four hits and four errors.
Polk did not advance a runner into scoring position in the game two defeat.
The Eagles will trek on in Citrus play when they travel to Melbourne to take on Eastern Florida State College, which received votes in the NICAA Poll this week, on Tuesday. Game times are scheduled for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
