WINTER HAVEN – The final month of the regular season for Polk State Soccer and Polk State Volleyball continues this week. The teams will combine for four matches this week – all at home.

While the volleyball program takes on a pair of top-three teams, Polk State Soccer will close the regular season with a pair of contests. That will be headlined by its Region 8 finale on Wednesday against No. 1 Daytona State College. 

WEEKLY SCHEDULE

Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 3 p.m.: No. 1 Daytona State College (10-0, 4-0 Region 8) at Polk State College (6-6-1, 1-3-1 Region 8)

Sunday, Oct. 19 at 12 p.m.: Saint Leo University JV (2-5) at Polk State (6-6-1)

PREVIEW

• Polk State will look to hand No. 1 Daytona State College, the reigning national champion, its first loss of the season on Wednesday. The Falcons won 3-0 when the teams met in Daytona Beach on Sept. 24. Polk State goalkeeper Ashley Miller finished with nine saves in the loss.

• Polk State has struggled of late, losing its last five matches. Over that stretch, the Eagles have been outscored 16-2.

• Daytona State has allowed just three goals all season. The Falcons are led by Shaneil Buckley, who is tied for the Region 8 lead with 12 goals. She leads the region with 56 shots and ranks second with 28 points.

• Polk State will celebrate Sophomore Day during its match against Saint Leo University JV on Sunday. Six sophomores – Paula Cortijo, Janessa Crespo, Kiana Kropp, Natasha Muchakati, Sofia Salas, Delight Kuboya – will be honored prior to the contest.

• Polk State set a season-high with nine goals in a 9-1 win over Saint Leo JV during the first meeting on Sept. 18. Seven different players scored goals for the Eagles. Janessa Crespo finished with two goals and three assists. Marie Narewski added two goals and two assists.

Saturday, Oct. 18 at 2 p.m.: No. 1 Florida SouthWestern State College (19-1, 8-0 Citrus Conference) at Polk State (7-10, 2-5 Citrus Conference)

PREVIEW

• Polk State picked up a big win on Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Hillsborough Community College. With the win, the Eagles are now tied for fourth place in the Citrus Conference. The top six teams make the FCSAA Tournament.

• In Saturday's win over Hillsborough, Alexia Ortiz tied a season-high with 16 kills. Natalie Aasen set a career-high with three service aces.

• Following her 20-dig performance on Saturday – a season-high in Citrus play – Isabella Ramos now ranks third in the FCSAA, averaging 3.77 digs per set. 

• Miami Dade College's Katianna Mejía Betancur leads the FCSAA by averaging 4.69 digs per set. She finished with 16 digs in a 3-0 win over the Eagles on Sept. 20.

• Florida SouthWestern State College's Sara Gamboa leads the FCSAA and ranks ninth in the country, averaging 3.98 kills per set. She had 13 kills in a 3-0 win over Polk State on Sept. 24. FSW's Aleksandra Lucic leads the nation with a .398 hitting percentage.
