WINTER HAVEN – It will be the biggest week in the athletics year to date. 

After closing the regular season with a win, Polk State Soccer will begin the postseason on Thursday. Polk State Volleyball will try to clinch a berth in the FCAA Tournament.

WEEKLY SCHEDULE

Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m.: No. 18 Daytona State College (12-9, 6-3 Citrus Conference) at Polk State College (7-12, 2-7 Citrus Conference)

Saturday, Oct. 25 at 2 p.m.: Polk State (7-12, 2-7 Citrus Conference) at Eastern Florida State College (11-11, 2-7 Citrus Conference)

PREVIEW

• For Wednesday's home match against Daytona State College, Polk State will recognize four sophomores as it celebrates it annual Sophomore Night. Isabella Ramos, Marina Santos, Alexia Ortiz and Rezzan Guner will be honored before the contest.

• Sarah Boe Soerenson led the Eagles with six kills and seven digs in Saturday's loss to No. 1 Florida SouthWestern State College.

• With wins over Daytona State and Eastern Florida State College, Polk State would clinch a berth in the FCSAA Tournament.

• Polk State beat Eastern Florida in the first meeting between the teams on Oct. 1 in five sets. Ortiz led the way in that one with 16 kills and four service aces. It was the Eagles' first Citrus Conference win under Head Coach Jessica Beal. 

• Daytona State beat the Eagles 3-1 when the teams met in Daytona Beach on Sept. 27. Ortiz led Polk State with 15 kills in that one. Sophia Marini paced the Falcons with 11 kills.

• Eastern Florida's Leyre Arroyo Sanchez ranks fourth in the FCSAA with 3.43 kills per set, but hasn't played since the Oct. 1 contest against the Eagles. 

• Daytona State's Alice Santoro is tied for third in the FCSAA, averaging 1.06 blocks per set. She also ranks fifth in the state with a .302 hitting percentage.

Thursday, Oct. 23 at 5:30 p.m.: Polk State College (7-7-1) vs. No. 1 Daytona State College (12-0) – Region 8 Tournament semifinals; Miami, Fla.

PREVIEW

• Polk State will need two wins at the Region 8 Tournament to keep its season alive. The Eagles open with Region 8 regular-season champion and reigning national champion Daytona State College. The Falcons won the two regular-season meetings between the schools by a combined 11-0 margin. The winner will face the winner of the first semifinal between Eastern Florida State College and Miami Dade College for the Region 8 Championship.

• Polk State celebrated Sophomore Day on Sunday with a 2-0 win over Saint Leo University JV. Janessa Crespo finished with an assist, becoming the first Polk State player to finish a season with 10 or more assists since Jillian Johnson in 2022. It was Polk State's third shutout win of the year. Crespo's 10 assists leads Region 8.

• Marie Narewski netted her team-leading ninth goal of the season for Polk State in Sunday's win. She ranks third in Region 8 in that category.

• This will mark the sixth straight season that Polk State and Daytona State meet in the Region 8 Tournament. The Falcons are 4-1 in those matches with all four wins coming in the semifinals. The lone Polk State victory was a 1-0 win in the 2022 Region 8 championship.

• Daytona State's Shaneil Buckley leads Region 8 in goals (14), points (34) and shots (64). She registered two goals and an assist in last week's 8-0 win over Polk State.
