Polk State Baseball sophomores shine during 2025 All-Star Weekend in Lakeland

LAKELAND – The regular season is still more than three months away, but Polk State Baseball players put on a show on Sunday morning. Eleven sophomores took part in the annual FCSAA Sophomore All-Star Weekend festivities at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium.

Polk State players helped Citrus Sun beat Citrus Mid in the game, 10-5. Citrus Sun is comprised of players from old Suncoast Conference schools. Citrus Mid is comprised of players from schools in the now defunct Mid-Florida Conference.

Polk State players showed off their bats, arms and speed during the contest. Prior to the game, players had a chance to showcase their skills for four-year programs and professional scouts.

At the plate, Kenay Acevedo, Hayden Testerman and Josh Cruz each finished with a hit and a stolen base. Zach Lester, last season's team leader in home runs and stolen bases, added a steal of his own.

On the mound, four different Eagles – Jason Sawyer, Roman Corinti, Vincent Antuna and Carson Montsdeoca – threw an inning. Polk State pitchers helped keep the Citrus Mid bats off balance, holding a potent opposing lineup to just five runs.

Corinti became the first Polk State sophomore to sign with a four-year program this recruiting cycle when he pledged to the University of South Alabama last month. Also participating in festivities on Sunday for Polk State were Kevin Brunet, Anthony Schatz and Kustarr Webb.

"It's always good to get our guys out in front of four-year schools and scouts," Head Coach Al Corbeil said. "This is a fun game because it pits players who already have a year of college baseball under their belts against one another. I really liked the way our guys competed at the plate, on the mound and on the bases."

Although the regular season doesn't get underway until late January, it's been a busy fall schedule for Polk State. As the fall slate nears an end, Polk State will host one of its signature events – the annual Costume Game – on Oct. 29 at 1:30 p.m. The game is played by Polk State players in their Halloween costumes as a fun way to bring the fall to a close but is also a fundraiser for the program.
