Box Score LAKELAND -- Polk State Soccer will head into the Region 8 Tournament with some positive momentum. The Eagles celebrated Sophomore Day on Sunday with a 2-0 win over Saint Leo University JV.
Prior to the contest, Polk State recognized all six sophomores --
Paula Cortijo,
Janessa Crespo,
Kiana Kropp,
Delight Kuboya,
Natasha Muchakati and
Sofia Salas. The two goals, however, were scored by freshmen.
Alayna Dial got the scoring started late in the first half.
Riley Whale was credited with the assist.
The Eagles (7-7-1) led 1-0 at halftime. It didn't take long after, however, for Polk State to double its lead.
The second half was only three minutes old when
Marie Narewski headed in the match's final goal -- her team-leading ninth of the season. In her final home match for Polk State, Crespo was credited with the assist.
Polk State managed just two shots but had lots of chances. The opposite was true for Saint Leo JV. The Lions didn't manage a single shot on goal.
Madelyn English played particularly well for Polk State on the defensive end.Â
Sunday's 2-0 victory is the third shutout of the season for Polk State and snaps a six-match losing streak. The Eagles will put their season on the line on Thursday in Miami when they play No. 1 Daytona State College in the Region 8 Tournament semifinals.Â
