LAKELAND — Since achieving its first national ranking in four years, Polk State Soccer has now lost consecutive matches. The Eagles closed the regular season with a 5-1 loss to No. 3 Miami Dade College on Monday.
The Eagles (5-5-2, 1-4-1 FCSAA) were their own worst enemy in the first half. After Polk State gave up an own goal in the 12th minute, a foul in the box gave Miami Dade a penalty kick that Dorina Fehertoi converted to give the Sharks a 2-0 lead at halftime.
"Give credit to Miami Dade," Head Coach Dee Shivraman said. "They are well tuned."
Miami Dade was able to extend its lead to 3-0 in the 47th minute but Polk State answered in the 60th minute.
Isabella O'Sullivan broke up the shutout for the Eagles.
Kaylin Allen was credited with her team-leading fifth assist of the year.
Polk State was able to get no closer. The Sharks were slipped a pair of goals past Polk State goalkeeper
Violeta Henao over the final nine minutes.
"I think there were parts of our game that I was really pleased with," Shivraman added. "We had much better possession tonight as compared to the Daytona State game last week. With the result, we were able to create some good opportunities in the second half."
O'Sullivan led Polk State with three shots.
Jaycie Noble and
Oriana Moreno added two shots apiece.
Gabby Louty added a shot.
Sofia Zapata finished with eight saves in goal for the Eagles. In relief, Henao added a save of her own.
"We had some outstanding individual performances," Shivraman said. "
Sofia Zapata and Violeta both came up with some big saves. I thought
Sophia Henriques and Oriana made some really good plays. Bella created a lot of issues for their defense, especially late in the game."
With the loss, Polk State will be the No. 4 seed in the FCSAA Tournament. The teams will meet again in Melbourne for the semifinals on Thursday.
