DAYTONA BEACH — In its first match as a nationally ranked team in four years, Polk State Soccer couldn't get the offense going against the two-time reigning national champions. The 20th-ranked Eagles were blanked at No. 7 Daytona State College on Wednesday night, 3-0.
Polk State held Daytona State scoreless for more than 89 minutes in a 1-1 draw last month in Lakeland. On Wednesday, however, the Falcons went ahead for good with a first-half goal.
Up 1-0 at halftime, Daytona State was able to double its lead in the 48th minute on a breakaway goal by Susu Roberts, the FCSAA's leading goal scorer. The Falcons added a third goal late.
After finishing with 10 saves in the first meeting, Polk State goalkeeper
Sofia Zapata managed seven stops on Wednesday.
"Looking at the positives,
Sofia Zapata put on an outstanding performance," Head Coach Dee Shivraman said. "Some of the saves she made were fantastic.
Jordan Robert and
Robyn Pickard were also stellar on defense."
Laura Sofia led the Eagles with three shots.
Jaycie Noble,
Riley Whale, and
Oriana Moreno also registered shots in the loss.
"I reminded the team that Daytona is the defending national champions," Shivraman added. "They've had six- and seven-goal efforts against good teams. We have conceded four in two matches against them and even had few good chances to score in the second half."
With just one more match remaining in the regular season, Polk State will try to clinch a winning season at home on Monday when it hosts Miami Dade College. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
