ST. PETERSBURG — Polk State Soccer was its own worst enemy on Monday night. Sloppy play on the defensive end allowed Eckerd College JV to slip past the Eagles, 2-1.
The Tritons scored the winning in the final minutes off a corner to hand Polk State (6-5-1) a fourth straight defeat and in heartbreaking fashion. The Eagles had a chance to clear on both Eckerd goals but couldn't execute.
Polk State trailed 1-0 at halftime but
Janessa Crespo eventually came through with the equalizer — her seventh goal of the season. Eckerd, however, was able to score the aforementioned goal in the 89th minute to leave with the win.
Polk State had its opportunities but found the net just once. In goal,
Ashley Miller finished with six saves.
During its skid, Polk State has managed just two total goals. The Eagles will try to get back on track when they visit No. 19 Eastern Florida State College for their final Region 8 road match of the regular season.
