Polk State Softball stuns No. 1 Indian River for first conference win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN — Fans at the Diamond Plex witnessed the biggest win for Polk State Softball in a decade on Tuesday night. The Eagles salvaged a doubleheader split with a 3-1 victory over No. 1 Indian River State College in the second game.

No-hit through four innings, Polk State went ahead for good with two runs in the fifth. After a single by Leia Hurst and an Indian River error, Savannah Jacobs connected on the biggest swing of the night — a two-run go-ahead triple.

The Eagles tacked on in the sixth with an insurance run, courtesy of a Chelsi Rae' Hebert RBI single. The story of the game, however, was Polk State pitcher Tessa Anderson.

Masterful for the evening, Anderson went the distance, allowing just an unearned run in the second on six hits. Anderson dominated despite not recording a strikeout until the seventh. She needed just 65 pitches to collect the complete-game victory.

The Pioneers made things interesting with back-to-back hits to open the seventh but an out on the bases proved critical. Anderson was able to settle down and strike out Sarah Phipps before getting Nyasia Williams to ground out to end the contest.

With a win over the nation's No. 1 team under its belt, Polk State has already surpassed last year's win total under second-year Head Coach Kevin Lewis. The victory not only handed Indian River its first loss of the year but it served as the first Citrus Conference win of the season for Polk State. Now 12-7 overall and 1-1 in conference play, the Eagles dropped their first 14 conference games last season.

The Eagles lost the first game 10-2 in a contest that was more competitive than the final score would indicate on Tuesday.

After the Pioneers drew first blood with a run in the top of the first, Polk State answered in the bottom half of the inning. Hebert, the team leader in RBIs, singled home Nayeli Hernandez to knot the game, 1-1.

Through four innings, Indian River held just a 2-1 lead. The Pioneers pulled away with four-run innings in the fifth and seventh. Polk State capped the scoring in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double from Jamie Reinhardt to score Hernandez.

Despite the loss, Hernandez had a monster game at the plate, going 4-for-4 with three doubles and both Polk State runs scored. Hurst added two hits for the Eagles. Hezenia Seabrook, Presley Smith, and Williams each finished with two RBIs for the Pioneers.

The Eagles will look for another win over a nationally ranked team on Thursday when it visits No. 19 College of Central Florida for a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
