Box Score DAYTONA BEACH — Polk State Soccer's toughest test thus far, and perhaps of the entire season, proved too stiff on Wednesday night. The Eagles fell to No. 1 Daytona State College, the reigning national champion, 3-0.
One of the top scoring teams in the nation coming in, Polk State (6-3-1, 1-1-1 Region 8) was shut out for the second straight match. Despite that, the contest was within reach for more than a half.
An own goal accounted for all the first-half scoring as Daytona State took a 1-0 lead to the locker room. It wasn't until the 75th minute that the Falcons found the net unaided by Polk State. Susu Roberts extended the lead to 2-0 before Shaneil Buckley put the exclamation point on the win in the 89th minute.
Marie Narewski impressed for a Polk State offense that managed just five total shots and two on goal. Narewski and
Kiana Kropp registered the only two shots on goal for Polk State. Goalkeeper
Ashley Miller continually kept the Eagles in it, recording nine saves throughout the night. Daytona State finished with 21 total shots.
"Our kids played tough," Head Coach Dee Shivraman said. "It was an outstanding performance by Ashley and Marie."
Even at 1-1-1 in Region 8 play at the midway point, the Eagles will begin the second half on Sunday when they travel to play Miami Dade College. The teams played to a 1-1 draw earlier this month in Lakeland.
