Polk Preview (Feb. 17, 2026)

WINTER HAVEN – Three Polk State teams will be in action this week, combining eight total games, including six at home. 

Polk State Baseball will try to remain perfect in Citrus Conference play. Polk State Softball, on the other hand, will play its final doubleheader before the start of conference action.

Polk State Basketball has been eliminated from postseason contention. It will play four of its final five games at home.

WEEKLY SCHEDULE

Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 5 p.m.: South Florida State College (9-5) at Polk State College (11-4)

Thursday, Feb. 19 at 2 p.m.: Polk State (11-4, 3-0 Citrus Conference) at No. 3 Florida SouthWestern State College (11-3, 2-1 Citrus Conference)

Saturday, Feb. 21 at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.: No. 3 Florida SouthWestern State College (11-3, 2-1 Citrus Conference) at Polk State (11-4, 3-0 Citrus Conference)

PREVIEW

• With two saves in Polk State's three-game sweep of Eastern Florida State College, Hayden Porter is now tied for the FCSAA lead with three saves on the season. Teammate Anthony Schatz is tied for third with two saves.

• By taking all three games from Eastern Florida State on Thursday and Saturday, Polk State is one of just two teams to start 3-0 in Citrus Conference play. The other is Daytona State College.

• Polk State's Roman Corinti has won each of his four starts this season and, with a 4-0 record, is tied for the national leader in wins. Corinti allowed just an unearned run in Saturday's 9-3 win over Eastern Florida State. He has not yielded an earned run in his last 11 innings.

• Polk State ranks fourth in the FCSAA and 15th nationally with 133 runs scored through 15 games. Eight different players have at least 10 RBIs for the Eagles this season.

• Polk State's Hayden Testerman ranks second in the FCSAA with 26 total hits and is tied for the FCSAA lead with seven doubles. Teammate Jack Muller is one behind with six.

• Polk State beat South Florida State College for its first win of the season on Jan. 24 by a 5-4 score. Testerman drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

• South Florida State College's Evan Garcia leads FCSAA Division II players with an 0.56 ERA. He did not pitch in the first meeting against Polk State. Connor Hill is the FCSAA Division II leader with three saves.

• Florida SouthWestern State College took all three meetings from Polk State last season. FSW's Chris Walley is tied for the FCSAA lead with six home runs. Aiden Talarico leads the FCSAA with 13 stolen bases.

PREVIEW

• With Saturday's loss to Daytona State College and wins by Indian River State College and Miami Dade College, Polk State has been eliminated from FCSAA Tournament contention.

• Polk State will host its annual “Black Out Game” on Wednesday night against St. Petersburg College. Students will get free food with proof of a Polk State ID.

• Polk State Head Coach Brandon Giles will be honored prior to Wednesday's game against St. Petersburg. After nine seasons and nearly 120 wins, Giles will resign at season's end.

• Isaiah McCray led Polk State with 19 points in Saturday's loss to Daytona State College. McCray ranks in the top five in the FCSAA in both free-throw and 3-point percentage.

• Polk State can play spoiler on Wednesday night. With a win, St. Petersburg College would be eliminated from FCSAA Tournament contention. The Titans won the first matchup on Jan. 21, 76-71. McCray and St. Pete's Michael Moten and Nadma Musonda all finished with 17 points.

• Indian River State College's Anthony Ferrer ranks fifth in the FCSAA in free-throw percentage, shooting nearly 82%. Indian River beat Polk State in the first matchup between the schools on Jan. 17 by a 91-74 score. Caleb Cameron led the Pioneers with 22 points. Saturday's trip to Fort Pierce will serve as the final road game of the season for the Eagles.

PREVIEW

• Polk State shortstop Calonnie Holmes led off the first game of last week's doubleheader vs. Lake-Sumter State College with a home run. It was the first lead-off home run hit by a Polk State player since Kailey Guethle in 2022. Holmes leads the Eagles in batting average (.406), hits (13), runs (8), triples (1), homers (3) and stolen bases (6).

• After hitting .232 with a home run and eight RBIs as a freshman last season, Polk State first baseman Makenzie Foster appears to be in the midst of a breakout season. Foster is hitting .300 with a home run and a team-leading 10 RBIs this season.

• Infielder Ciana Vargas has hit in five straight games and ranks second on the team with a .360 batting average for Polk State this season.

• Jaelin Grant threw a scoreless inning in her Polk State debut last time out against Lake-Sumter State. Layla Hinojosa has also been solid for the Eagles in the circle, posting a 0.72 ERA for the season in seven appearances.
