Polk State Hoops falls to No. 15 Daytona State, eliminated from postseason contention

WINTER HAVEN – Polk State Basketball's rut continued on Saturday as the Eagles were defeated by No. 15 Daytona State College, 90-62.

Isaiah McCray and Ethan Simon each made baskets to give Polk State (4-20, 0-11 Citrus Conference) an early 4-0 lead. The Falcons answered with the next seven points and though they never trailed again, Polk State went to the locker room feeling OK.

After trailing by as many as 12 points in the first half, Moises Valdez knocked down a 3-pointer with less than a minute remaining in the half as the Eagles cut the deficit to 44-35 at the break. Polk State shot a respectable 7-for-18 from deep in the first half.

The second half, however, was a different story. Polk State shot just 28% from the field and 2 of 12 from distance in the half. Daytona State gradually pulled away.

For the game, Polk State shot just 33% from the field. McCray led the team with 19 points on 7-for-14 shooting and 4-for-9 from beyond the arc. Jimmy Cami added seven points, five rebounds and two blocks. Adrian Shackleford led Daytona State with 18 points and eight rebounds.

With Saturday's loss and wins by Indian River State College and Miami Dade College, Polk State was eliminated from postseason contention. The Eagles will host their annual "Black Out" game on Wednesday against St. Petersburg College.
