WINTER HAVEN — Polk State Softball's final home doubleheader of the year didn't go as the Eagles hoped. They managed just two total hits in a pair of run-rule shutout losses to No. 6 Santa Fe College on Saturday.
Santa Fe's Belle Mancillas tossed a six-inning no-hitter in the first game — an 8-0 victory for the Saints. Mancillas allowed just three walks and struck out seven.Â
For three innings, Polk State's
Layla Hinojosa kept Santa Fe off the scoreboard. Miranda Murch got the scoring started for Santa Fe with a solo home run in the fourth before capping the scoring with a two-run shot during a five-run sixth. The Saints scored two runs in the fifth.
Murch and McKenzie Cox combined to score four runs and drive in seven for Santa Fe. Sydney English added three hits.
Lacey Osborne,
Makenzie Foster and
Emma Kaylor each drew walks for Polk State.
Santa Fe needed just five innings to roll to a 9-0 victory in the second game. Pitchers Morgyn Stevens and Skyler Alvarez combined to hold Polk State (21-33, 13-25 Citrus Conference) to two hits.
Leia Hurst had both hits for the Eagles. Like Hinojosa in the first game,
Avery Wende kept Santa Fe off the scoreboard for three innings. The Saints blew things open with seven runs in the fourth inning before adding two more in the fifth.
Cox finished 3-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs. English and Haylee McCrea each went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs.
With the losses, Polk State finishes an even 14-14 at home. Polk State closes the year with a doubleheader at College of Central Florida on Tuesday.
