MIAMI — Hitting the road to take on a top-10 team proved too tall of a task for Polk State Soccer on Friday night. The Eagles opened FCSAA play with a 5-0 loss at No. 9 Miami Dade College.

Statistically, the disparity wasn't too great. Miami Dade outshot the Eagles (4-2-1, 0-1 FCSAA) by a 16-12 margin, including 11-7 in shots on goal. The difference was penalty kicks and corners.

Two of Miami Dade's goals came on penalty kicks and the other three came off corner kicks — an area where the Sharks held a significant 13-2 advantage. Oriana Quintero finished with a hat trick for Miami Dade. Stacy Thany Thomas and Anna Flavia also scored goals.

Isabella O'Sullivan led the Eagles with three shots on goal, including one that hit the post early on. The Sharks scored twice in the first 18 minutes and led 2-0 at halftime.

Riley Whale finished with three shots for Polk State, including two on goal. Jaycie Noble and Oriana Moreno each registered a pair of shots.

All three second-half goals for Miami Dade came before the 65th minute. In goal, Sofia Zapata finished with four saves for Polk State. Julia Suelly had five saves for Miami Dade.

Polk State will look to bounce back from its first loss against junior college competition when it returns home for its first FCSAA match of the year on Wednesday in Lakeland. The Eagles will look to beat a nationally ranked Eastern Florida State College team at home for the second straight season.
