LAKELAND — A mistake-prone first half was too much for Polk State Soccer to overcome. The Eagles suffered their first home defeat of the season on Wednesday afternoon to No. 11 Eastern Florida State College, 3-0.

All three goals came in the first half. Akelia Johnson got the scoring started for the Titans off a corner kick early on. Esme Johnson added two goals on a penalty kick and a free kick, respectively.

Polk State played a much cleaner second half, spending much more time on the attack. Clean looks at the goal, however, were few and far between. 

Goalkeeper Sofia Zapata kept Eastern Florida off the scoreboard over the final 55-plus minutes. She finished with two saves.

Jaycie Noble and Riley Whale each led the Eagles (4-3-1, 0-2 FCSAA) with two shots apiece. Isabella O'Sullivan, Alayna Dial and Laura Sofia added shots of their own.

After dropping consecutive contests, Polk State will play its third straight match against nationally ranked competition on Friday. The Eagles will take on No. 19 University of South Carolina Lancaster in Miami at 12 p.m.
