Box Score LAKELAND — Polk State Soccer showed once again that it could hang with the nation's best. In the end, a late goal was the difference as No. 4 Daytona State College escaped with a 2-1 victory.
For more than 85 minutes, Polk State (6-3, 0-3 Region 8) found itself even at a goal apiece. The Falcons then found the back of the net for the decisive goal.
"Despite the deluge of injuries, I am very proud of our team," said Polk State Head Coach Dee Shivraman. "They are resilient and stubborn. These qualities will help us move forward."
Polk State trailed 1-0 at halftime, but drew even late in the second half.
Melissa Del Valle came through with a laser for the equalizer.
Edjenie Joseph assisted on the goal.
Statistically, Daytona State held the upper hand. The Falcons finished with eight shots to just three for the Eagles.
Polk State was assessed with six fouls to four for Daytona State. Joseph and
Anisa Lahbiki were each hit with yellow cards.
All three of Polk State's losses this season have come in Region 8 play and all three came against teams currently ranked in the top 10 nationally. Things won't get much easier as Polk State travels to Melbourne to face No. 8 Eastern Florida State College on Wednesday. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
